Acne is a widespread skin problem that usually affects teenagers. Most people suffer from mild or common forms of acne. However, there is a small percentage of the population that is forced to deal with forms of severe acne, like cystic acne.

Nodulocystic Acne: Common Characteristics

Cysts are not common in mild cases of acne. But, they are prevalent in nodulocystic acne. These types of acne cysts, which are actually a dilation of the skin's normal structure, can be small or more than an inch in diameter.

Acne cysts are usually inflamed nodules that can also be filled with fluid. It is never a good idea to pick at these cysts as it can lead to skin damage and subsequent scarring.

These cysts can be widespread or isolated and often appear around the face, scalp, neck, chest, shoulders, or back. Sometimes these cysts will blend together causing more damage and leading to another form of severe acne: acne conglobata.

Treating Nodulocystic Acne

Just like with all types of acne, nodulocystic acne can be mild or severe. In the case of mild cystic acne, a good acne cream could do the trick. Isolated cysts can also be spot-treated, however, if you suffer from a mild case of cystic acne, it is advisable that you visit your dermatologist.

With severe cases, cystic acne treatment often works with a combination of isotreitinoin and antibiotics. Steroid injections may also be needed to help dissolve cysts and nodules quickly.

Depending on the severity of the scar, it may be necessary to resort to surgery in order to remove cysts that do not respond to other treatment options. Your physician may also try draining certain cysts.

Besides the treatments mentioned above, you can also help your skin stay healthy by being vigilant with your cleansing routine. This is also important if you want to keep skin free from debris and excess oils. As long as your skin is healthy, it will be better equipped to handle any forms of aggression both from within and outside of the body.
